The initiative is part of special security measures introduced during the Holy Year, which was inaugurated on 8 December.

They are dressed in the uniforms of their national police force in order to be easily recognisable by Polish and American citizens who may ask them for assistance.

Policemen from the two countries will also cooperate with their Italian colleagues in the exchange of information on the pilgrims and tourists from Poland and the US and will offer help in establishing contact with the diplomatic services.

No details have been disclosed as to the number of policemen from Poland and the United States currently on duty in the Italian capital.

The Holy Year, which runs until 20 November 2016, is a special invitation from the Church to believers to renew their relationship with God. (mk/rg)
