It is understood that the flight crew acted after a warning from a passenger, and the plane landed in Burgas, eastern Bulgaria.

All of the passengers got off the plane, and checks were carried out to verify if the threat was genuine.

However, a spokesperson for Small Planet Airlines, the operator of the Airbus A320, has since confirmed that the passenger's claim was 'a joke.'

A 67-year-old Polish man is currently being questioned.

On 31 October, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for an apparent attack on a Russian passenger plane that crashed in Egypt's Sinai peninsula that day. Over 220 people died in the crash. (nh)
