According to local sources, as many as 60 people took part in the fight, which took place on a popular promenade that runs along the seafront.

The local Famagusta Gazette claimed that the “huge fight” started among Polish football fans, and that “a group of young Cypriot men then joined the fight.”

Poland's consul in Nicosia has stated that four Poles were hospitalised as a result of the incident, and that local police are investigating the matter.

Many fans arrived early for Thursday's match, while a second wave of 160 supporters is due to touch down in Nicosia at 4:00 pm local time. The fans will be given a police escort to the stadium. (nh)
