Polish participation in a peacekeeping mission to Ukraine is purely hypothetical, Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said on Thursday.

“Poland supports all measures that serve stability and peace in Ukraine”, Siemoniak, who is also deputy prime minister said. “It would be premature to talk about a mission of any kind since no such decision has been made.”
President Bronisław Komorowski expressed readiness to participate in a peacekeeping mission at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Petro Poroshenko on Wednesday.
Any such mission would be contingent on a United Nations Security Council mandate, both Komorowski and Siemoniak said.
As a permanent member of the Security Council, Russia holds veto power, making approval for Polish peacekeepers extremely unlikely. (an)
