Russia offers Poland statue swap

Russia has offered to allow a statue to the victims of the 2010 air crash that killed President Lech Kaczyński in return for a statue to the Soviet Red Army soldiers in Poland.

The Polish ambassador to Moscow, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz met the Russian minister of culture, Vladimir Medinski on Tuesday to discuss the commemoration of the crash victims.
The ambassador said the Russian minister offered to agree to a statue at Smolensk in the west of Russia, where the plane crashed on 10 April, 2010 on the condition of a statue being erected to the Soviet Red Army soldiers at Kraków, Poland’s second-largest city.
Poland plays host to the graves of 600,000 Red Army soldiers killed in action and 700,000 Soviet prisoners of war who died in German camps. (an)
