A joint letter was signed on the issue at a ministerial meeting of the Weimar Triangle countries (Poland, Germany and France) in Potsdam, Monday, and addressed to the EU’s top diplomat Federica Mogherini.

At the meeting, German defence minister Ursula von der Leyen said that the current strategy is over ten years old and should be changed to reflect new political and security challenges, adding that Weimar Triangle defence ministers should play an significant role in the formation of a new strategy.

Siemoniak underlined that Europe needs the defence cooperation of Poland, Germany and France, answering Von der Leyen’s call that Europe spends too much time in crisis situations.

The defence ministers said that any development of the EU’s security structures would be supplementary to NATO’s.

The meeting was the first between the Weimar Triangle defence ministers since 2006. (jb)
