Polish president calls for new NATO doctrine

Poland’s President Bronisław Komorowski called on Wednesday for a revision of the NATO defence strategic doctrine in response to Russia’s newfound aggressiveness.

Speaking after a meeting of the National Security Council (RPN) on the new Russian military doctrine, Komorowski called for greater unity of the “Western world” and buttressing of Poland’s own defensive capabilities.

“It is already happening,” he said.

President Vladimir Putin in December a new doctrine, which names NATO expansion as the biggest external threat to Russia, alongside terrorism sparked by instability in the neighbourhood.

Komorowski described the Russian doctrine as “illustrative of a negative phenomenon, that is Russia’s strategic turn against the whole Western world.” (an)
