Bulgarian defence minister in Warsaw to discuss Ukraine, jet fighter deal

Bulgaria’s Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev visited Warsaw on Monday to discuss the situation in Ukraine and defence cooperation with his Polish counterpart, Tomasz Siemoniak.

Bulgaria is considering awarding the contract to modernise its fleet of MiG-29 fighter jets to Polish defence firms, said Siemoniak, who is also deputy prime minister.
This was a business, not a political decision, he said, though adding Bulgaria is looking for partners other than Russia, with which the Balkan nation has long-standing ties.
The defence minister’s Warsaw visit was his first official trip abroad since Bulgaria’s change of government in November last year. This illustrates the role of Poland in that country’s strategic thinking, Siemoniak said.
The political instability in Bulgaria has hindered contacts in recent years and they are being revived after three and a half years on the back burner, the minister said.
The two ministers “easily found common language” on Ukraine, Siemoniak also said. (an)
