FM Schetyna in Hungary for Ukraine talks

Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna was in Budapest for a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Szijjártó and PM Viktor Orbán, Wednesday.

The meetings on Wednesday are meant to cover the “strengthening of the unity of the Visegrad Group” and the escalating conflict in Ukraine.
“The main topics on the agenda are the crisis in Ukraine, the common policy of the Visegrad Group to strengthen its unity in various aspects, as well as [Polish-Hungarian] bilateral relations,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Marcin Wojciechowski told the PAP news agency.
The Visegrad Group includes four countries: Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
The meeting comes as Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán has come under fire for going against the EU line of increasing sanctions on Russia, as well as a recent deal which may see Russia loan Budapest EUR 10 billion for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Paks, central Hungary.
Since the Ukraine crisis deepened Orbán has repeatedly voiced his dismay at the EU’s move to slap sanctions on Russia, citing problems for Hungarian exports due to the wide-ranging restrictions.
However, at a meeting between Orbán and German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the beginning of February, the Hungarian PM discounted any military aid for Ukraine. (rg/jb)
