The announcement came at the beginning of a meeting of NATO defence ministers in Brussels, the first since the NATO summit in Newport in September 2014.

The meeting aims to reform NATO’s Response Force, which is to include the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), commonly called the spearhead.

The meeting also considered the implementation of the Readiness Action Plan which was agreed at the Wales summit last year and looked ahead to the next NATO summit planned for Warsaw in 2016.

“We are ready to do a lot for the VJTF and are ready to host their exercises in Poland,” Siemoniak said, adding that the country is prepared to take on the role as a framework nation in the military alliance.

Speaking on Thursday morning, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that “we are adapting our posture and our forces to this changing security environment. To conduct NATO’s full range of missions. And to deal with challenges from any direction.”

“We have already increased our military presence in the eastern part of the Alliance,” he added. (jb)
