Federica Mogherini took over from Catherine Ashton as head of the 28-nation bloc's foreign policy on 1 November and this is her first trip outside Brussels since taking up the post.

After talks with Minister Schetyna she will meet with Poland's president Bronislaw Komorowski and Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz.

Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Marcin Wojciechowski has told the PAP news agency that talks focused on the EU's Eastern Partnership programme, changes to the functioning of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, which is chaired by Mogherini, and EU defense and security policy.

“We will have a discussion on our overall strategy towards Russia and Ukraine at the next meeting of foreign ministers on 17 November,” the EU chief of diplomacy told journalists after the talks with the Polish foreign minister.

“That's in 10 days and we will have to see what happens in the region from now until then,” she added. (pg)
