Marcin Zendarski, who is serving time at Garsten prison in Upper Austria, had apparently smuggled both a smartphone and marijuana seeds into the facility.

In a bid to show friends that life behind bars was not all drudgery, he uploaded a picture of himself brandishing a marijuana plant that had been grown inside the prison.

However, the picture promptly went viral, and after prison authorities got wind of what was going on, an extensive search was made of the premises.

The search led to a spate of confiscations of various forbidden items, including smartphones and illegal drugs.

Zendarski was immediately subjected to a wave of threats from fellow convicts who had lost possessions in the search. The Pole was duly placed on special watch as a protective measure. (nh)
