The visit marks a return to Warsaw for Polish Independence Day celebrations by the Lithuanian president, who last year could not attend due to “urgent matters concerning domestic affairs,” although Grybauskaite also shunned Baltic security talks in Warsaw in April this year.
The two heads of state met to discuss preparations of the Eastern Partnership summit to be held in Vilnius on 28-29 November, “with special attention paid to the perspective of Ukraine’s signing of the EU association agreement,” the Presidential Chancellery underlined in a statement.
The EU would like to see Ukraine sign the association agreement at the summit, which is being hosted in Vilnius as part of Lithuania’s rotating presidency of the EU Council.
However, the main obstacle to signing the agreement is the continued imprisonment of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
The EU considers her imprisonment to be political, as she is an arch opponent of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich.
EU special envoys, former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski and former European Parliament President Pat Cox are currently in Ukraine for their final mission, and are expected to present the final report to the European Parliament on 13 November. (jb)
