Over 70 US embassies around the world hide Special Collection Service (SCS) electronic monitoring centres, including the American Embassy in Warsaw, a British investigative journalist claims.

The electronic monitoring centres, writes journalist Duncan Campbell on his web site, are evident by shed-like structures on the roofs of the embassy buildings, as can be seen in the photograph above.

The installations are allegedly part of a highly classified joint US Central Intelligence Agency/National Security Agency program charged with inserting eavesdropping equipment to spy on foreign governments and communication centres by the American intelligence services, as shown by documents released by whistleblower Edward Snowden in what has become a scandal that has damaged relations between the United States and governments in Berlin, Paris and elsewhere.

The allegations that the roof-top installations on top of the embassy in Warsaw, Berlin, Brussels, Stockholm and many other locations makes the front page of German magazine Der Spiegel this week.

Following revelations that German chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone was tapped by American intelligence for up to ten years, Poland’s digitalization minister Michal Boni said last week that "if it's true that top government officials from various countries [have been under surveillance] it would be a global scandal," adding, however, that he was not aware of conversations between Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Merkel via cell phones.

Minister Boni added, however, that “these conversations always take place in a way where security can be assured". (pg)
