“Inshallah,” Sikorski adds in his tweet following the Iranian presidential election, which means 'god willing' in Arabic.

While the British government called on Rouhani, seen as a reformer, to "set Iran on a different course for the future,” Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu issued a statement saying, "the international community must not give in to wishful thinking or temptation and loosen the pressure on Iran for it to stop its nuclear programme."

Rouhani, who succeeds the controversial Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, received 50.70 percent of votes on 14 June, just crossing the minimum requirement to avoid a second round run-off.

The EU's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said that she remains "firmly committed to working with the new Iranian leadership towards a swift diplomatic solution of the nuclear issue."

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon congratulated Iran's new president, saying he "intends to remain engaged with Iranian authorities and with the President-elect on issues relevant to the international community and the welfare of the Iranian people." (pg)
