Officers from Poland's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBS) detained the man at about 2 am on Sunday morning while the suspect was entering a late night store in the city.

“The man had been sought for three years on a European Arrest Warrant issued by Europol for murder, among other crimes, and for being a member of an international organised crime group,” said police press spokesman Piotr Bieniak in an interview with the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

According to Bieniak, the suspect was taken by surprise and did not resist arrest.

However, locating the fugitive had been a painstaking process.

“His arrest was not easy, as he regularly changed his address, as well as his telephones and cars, and even his looks,” Bieniak revealed.

The former Latvian policeman was arrested carrying the documents of another man.

The suspect is currently being held in custody in Bydgoszcz, where he will await a decision by a local court on prospective deportation. (nh)
